I Samuel 24:3Sefaria

The relentless pursuit of David reaches its peak in the harsh wilderness of Ein Gedi. Saul does not bring regular soldiers; he selects an elite, hand-picked military force Because the army was already mobilized for a campaign against the Philistines, Saul did not need to issue a new draft. He carefully chose this specific group to mask his true intentions, hoping the general public would believe he was simply continuing the war against the Philistines rather than embarking on a personal hunt for David [מלבי״ם].

The search takes place among massive, towering cliffs where wild goats naturally live and nest, giving the rocky region its name. The choice of this extreme terrain reveals the careful strategies at play. On one hand, even though David knew God was protecting him, he did not rely on miracles or leave himself open to danger, actively seeking refuge in the most hidden and difficult-to-reach areas [רלב״ג].

At the same time, a true battle of wits unfolds in these mountains. Saul naturally assumed that David would seek shelter on the highest, most remote rocky peaks, and he directed his search there. However, David anticipated Saul's exact line of thinking. Using this to his advantage, he chose to hide in a cave located right next to the main public road. He understood that Saul would never imagine looking for him in such an obvious and easily accessible location [מלבי״ם].
