ישעיהו, פרק כ״ו, פסוק י״ג

Isaiah 26:13Sefaria

From the depths of exile and foreign oppression, a profound cry of absolute loyalty and hope for redemption emerges. Throughout history, the Israelites have maintained a steadfast devotion, presenting this enduring faithfulness as the very reason they are worthy of God's peace and salvation.

For generations, the people endured severe subjugation under foreign nations. This was not merely standard political rule, but a harsh mastery and deep oppression [רש"י, מצודת ציון]. Some commentators emphasize that this dynamic functioned as literal physical ownership, where foreign empires treated the Israelites as complete property rather than ordinary subjects [מלבי"ם]. Under the control of these masters, the oppression extended far beyond physical suffering, sometimes seeping into the spiritual realm [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These rulers actively attempted to force the people to act against God's will, violate the Torah, and worship other gods [רש"י, מלבי"ם].

Despite this immense pressure, the Israelites displayed an absolute refusal to surrender their faith. The primary approach among commentators is that they firmly rejected the demands of their oppressors, continuing to declare that God alone is the true God and that He has no partner [רש"י, מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. This unwavering stance required enormous sacrifice. Had the people agreed to abandon their religion and adopt the gods of their captors, they could have escaped their suffering and even achieved the same high status and greatness as their enemies. Instead, they chose to endure torture and hardship to protect their loyalty to God [רד"ק].

This devotion was never just a matter of spoken words. Holding onto their faith represented active worship, prayer, and absolute trust in God, even while crushed under a foreign yoke [שד"ל]. It also reflected a deep recognition that God is the only true source of help. Knowing that salvation cannot come from anyone else, the people directed their hopes entirely toward Him [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, it is only through God's continuous support that they possess the strength to keep calling out to Him and offering thanks for His wonders [שד"ל].
