Isaiah 34:5Sefaria

God's vengeance against the enemies of Israel unfolds through a powerful image of a divine sword operating across two distinct realms: heaven and earth. Spiritual upheavals and divine decrees always begin in the higher worlds before descending to materialize in the physical realm below Like a predator drinking the blood of its prey, this divine sword is depicted as drinking until it is completely satiated on its own

The sword's first strike occurs in the heavens, targeting the spiritual guardian angels of the nations. This sequence reflects a fundamental spiritual rule: a nation cannot be punished on earth until its heavenly representative is first defeated In this upper realm, the strike is an act of pure vengeance, delivered without any process of trial or judgment [מלבי״ם].

Once the sword is satisfied in the heavens, it descends to the physical world to enact justice upon Edom, identified as the nation of Amalek, punishing them for the harm they inflicted upon Israel [רש״י, רד״ק]. In stark contrast to the pure vengeance executed in the heavens, the earthly strike against Edom is a calculated act of measured judgment [מלבי״ם].

The targeted people are marked for absolute ruin. The primary approach among commentators is that God has decreed total destruction and desolation upon them, dedicating them to annihilation out of deep hostility. Alternatively, this status implies that they are the target of God's warfare during a time of emergency [רש״י], or that they are a people caught helplessly in His trap, much like prey in a hunter's net [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Offering a more precise distinction, another perspective suggests that while Edom represents the idol-worshipping nation as a whole, the ultimate doom is directed specifically at the city of Bozrah. As Edom's center of belief, it is the primary focus of God's struggle against their faith [מלבי״ם].
