God constantly reaches out to guide humanity, yet the response is often one of stubbornness or self-deception. When a nation strays from the proper path, divine communication can take different forms, ranging from gentle instruction to sharp rebuke.

The primary approach among commentators is that God offers constant guidance, teaching and showing the people the honest path they must adopt to achieve true righteousness and find refuge in Him [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. As part of this instruction, God details the proper, good actions they ought to perform. Alternatively, He points directly to the deeds they are currently doing that go against His will, urging them to correct their ways [רש״י, אבן עזרא].

In contrast, other commentators read this divine address as one of mockery and cynicism. After remaining silent while the people rebelled, God now steps forward to shatter their false illusion of innocence. He declares that He will expose and publicize their so-called righteousness, revealing that their true actions are actually wicked [רד״ק, שד״ל].

Ultimately, the outcome yields no benefit [מצודת ציון]. This lack of usefulness aligns with both perspectives. From the standpoint of divine guidance, God's teachings fail to help simply because the people choose to ignore them, turning a deaf ear and preferring a life of lawlessness [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From the perspective of the people's own conduct, their evil deeds and reliance on idol worship instead of God will never save them in a time of crisis or vindicate them in judgment; rather, such choices will only bring them harm [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רד״ק, שד״ל].
