עַל־מִי֙ תִּתְעַנָּ֔גוּ עַל־מִ֛י תַּרְחִ֥יבוּ פֶ֖ה תַּאֲרִ֣יכוּ לָשׁ֑וֹן הֲלוֹא־אַתֶּ֥ם יִלְדֵי־פֶ֖שַׁע זֶ֥רַע שָֽׁקֶר׃

A sharp prophetic rebuke confronts a nation lost in arrogance and pleasure-seeking, drawing a harsh contrast between their proud behavior and their deeply corrupt spiritual roots. The prophet questions the very foundation of their confidence and joy. The primary approach among commentators views this as a challenge to their source of support. Having abandoned God, they are left without a true foundation for goodness. Had they been worthy, they would have found their delight in Him, but instead, they place their trust in worthless idols [רש״י, מצודת דוד, שד״ל]. Others view this as a direct critique of material excess and pride. The rebuke targets those who place their faith in astrology and witchcraft, sinking into the physical pleasures of food and drink while feeling inexplicably secure [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this self-satisfaction might stem from their own beautiful and eloquent speech, which fills them with pride [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or it may reflect a shallow search for anyone who can provide them with immediate favors [אבן עזרא].

The critique then shifts to their brazen expressions and open disrespect. Traditionally, their physical gestures of mockery symbolize a deep contempt toward God and His prophets [רש״י, רד״ק, שד״ל]. They speak with audacity, driven by a cynical worldview of indulging in physical pleasures today because death may come tomorrow [מלבי״ם]. Yet, instead of directing their scorn at the prophets, they would do better to turn their criticism inward [רד״ק]. Another perspective suggests this brazenness is not merely mockery, but the sheer audacity to constantly demand their material needs [מצודת דוד]. Viewed through the lens of their speech, these actions represent a continuation of their eloquent but entirely hollow words [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To shatter this misplaced pride, the prophet bluntly reminds them of their true nature, describing them as offspring of crime and lies. Some commentators explain this through a metaphor of illegitimacy, comparing them to children born of infidelity who are falsely claimed by the mother's husband. This illustrates a generation that has completely abandoned the righteous path of its ancestors, acting as though they do not belong to them at all [שד״ל, מלבי״ם]. Conversely, another approach argues that these harsh titles describe their present actions rather than their origins. They are individuals who actively generate crime and sow deception in their daily lives [מצודת דוד], proving that despite their polished speech, they are completely devoid of truth [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
