וְדִבַּרְתִּ֤י מִשְׁפָּטַי֙ אוֹתָ֔ם עַ֖ל כׇּל־רָעָתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲזָב֗וּנִי וַֽיְקַטְּרוּ֙ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥י יְדֵיהֶֽם׃

A severe indictment is brought against the nation, marking a turning point where divine warnings transition into actual punishment. God presents His case against the residents of Judah and Jerusalem, arguing His claims directly [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. However, this argument is not merely a verbal debate. It is a strict judgment of retribution for their wicked actions [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God's voice in this trial takes a physical form. He brings foreign kings against the nation, and the resulting suffering serves as the ultimate rebuke [רד״ק]. Taking the trial metaphor further, God acts as a prosecutor laying out His claims, while the invading foreign kings serve as the judges who execute the punishment [מלבי״ם].

The core of this prosecution centers on the people offering sacrifices and burning incense to false deities [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This betrayal represents a tragic, three-stage downward spiral [מלבי״ם]. The first stage is simply forsaking God. Had the people abandoned Him merely to cast off their obligations and live freely, one might find a slight trace of understanding for their actions. Instead, they moved to a second stage, choosing to burn incense to other gods. Rather than seeking freedom, they willingly enslaved themselves to the even heavier burden of idol worship. The third and most severe stage is their decision to bow down to the creations of their own hands. They did not adopt new beliefs for any logical benefit. They worshipped lifeless statues they crafted themselves, fully aware that these objects possessed no real power or substance.
