Jeremiah 1:8Sefaria

אַל־תִּירָ֖א מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֥ אֲנִ֛י לְהַצִּלֶ֖ךָ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃

Stepping into the role of a divine messenger carries the heavy burden of facing a hostile environment. God provides a promise of protection to dispel the natural fears that accompany the start of such a dangerous mission. The primary approach among commentators is that the instruction not to be afraid refers to the people and nations the prophet is sent to confront. Jeremiah worried he might stumble over his words, and he knew perfectly well that his harsh messages would provoke intense anger, putting his life at genuine risk [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה].

Alternatively, another perspective suggests that the fear was not directed at human enemies at all, but rather at the ministering angels. According to this view, Jeremiah worried the angels would grow jealous that a flawed human of flesh and blood was granted such a direct and unique revelation. In response to this specific anxiety, God promises to personally watch over him [אהבת יהונתן].

The divine promise of rescue carries a sobering reality about the exact nature of this protection. God does not guarantee absolute immunity from harm or a life free of suffering. Enemies will indeed succeed in harming and even striking him. The assurance is that God will ultimately intervene and rescue him after the fact, ensuring his attackers never succeed in their ultimate goal of killing him [רד״ק, אהבת יהונתן].

The necessity for this specific type of rescue is rooted in the nature of Jeremiah's spiritual work. Some leaders operated at the elevated level of a "seer," maintaining a constant, unbroken connection to the higher spiritual realms that inherently shielded them from all human harm. Jeremiah, however, functions at the level of a "prophet." In this state, the divine spirit rests upon him only at specific times. During the intervals between these moments of inspiration, he remains completely exposed and vulnerable to physical threats. Because of this fluctuating spiritual state, he requires an explicit and direct promise that God will stand by him and save him from mortal danger [אהבת יהונתן].
