ירמיהו, פרק כ״ח, פסוק י״ג

Jeremiah 28:13Sefaria

A false promise of freedom often leads to a much harsher reality. When the false prophet Hananiah performed a symbolic act to declare an end to Babylonian rule, his actions did not bring liberation. Instead, they triggered a severe prophecy of wrath, guaranteeing a much more painful outcome.

Hananiah boldly declared that the oppressive rule of the Babylonian king would be shattered. Because of this public declaration, he is held responsible as if he had physically broken the wooden yokes of oppression himself [מצודת דוד]. However, God responds by replacing those broken pieces with something far worse. The new reality will stand directly in place of the old one [מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators is that rebelling and denying the word of God only increases His anger and deepens the subjugation. Rather than escaping the heavy burden of a wooden yoke, the people will now be forced to carry a yoke of iron, which is significantly heavier and stronger.

There is an interesting detail regarding the physical structure of these tools of oppression. The items broken by the false prophet were not the heavy beams themselves, but rather the straps and bands used to tie the burden around the neck. Therefore, the wooden items simply refer to the straps that held a wooden beam. In the harsh new reality, the iron items do not mean the straps themselves will be made of metal. Rather, it means these straps will now be used to secure a massive new iron yoke, highlighting the unbreakable and inescapable nature of the coming subjugation [רד״ק].
