ירמיהו, פרק ל״ב, פסוק כ״ה

Jeremiah 32:25Sefaria

וְאַתָּ֞ה אָמַ֤רְתָּ אֵלַי֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה קְנֵֽה־לְךָ֧ הַשָּׂדֶ֛ה בַּכֶּ֖סֶף וְהָעֵ֣ד עֵדִ֑ים וְהָעִ֥יר נִתְּנָ֖ה בְּיַ֥ד הַכַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ {ס}

Jeremiah's prayer reaches a climax of deep confusion as he confronts a divine instruction that sharply clashes with the unfolding reality around him. The primary approach among commentators is that the prophet finds himself caught in a severe contradiction. God had informed him in advance about the arrival of his relative, which served as a clear command to purchase the field just as any ordinary buyer would, complete with summoning witnesses [מצודת דוד].

At the same time, the city is on the brink of falling to the enemy. Jeremiah struggles to understand the practical use and value of acquiring property that the invading army will immediately seize and confiscate. While he had previously explained to Baruch son of Neriah that purchasing the land was a symbol and hint for the future, he had arrived at that conclusion entirely through his own personal reasoning. He had not yet received a specific prophecy explaining the true reason behind the instruction. Therefore, he turns directly to God, asking for clarity to truly understand the deeper meaning behind the action he was told to perform [מצודת דוד].
