עֹ֤שֶׂה חֶ֙סֶד֙ לַֽאֲלָפִ֔ים וּמְשַׁלֵּם֙ עֲוֺ֣ן אָב֔וֹת אֶל־חֵ֥יק בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם הָאֵ֤ל הַגָּדוֹל֙ הַגִּבּ֔וֹר יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמֽוֹ׃

God’s leadership operates across the entire span of history, viewing all generations from the beginning of time to the end as a single, continuous chain. Within this grand perspective, a profound contrast emerges between boundless kindness and exacting justice, all directed by a Creator who governs every system of the universe.

In extending kindness, God grants favor to the descendants of the righteous for thousands of generations, a reward earned by the merits of their ancestors [מצודת דוד]. This lasting grace is a fundamental part of how He guides the world [מלבי״ם]. Conversely, when exacting justice, God repays the sins of previous generations directly into the inner being of their descendants, a principle rooted in earlier biblical teachings [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. However, this is not an arbitrary punishment. The commentators agree that children are only held accountable for the sins of their ancestors if they actively embrace those same wicked deeds and continue down the identical destructive path.

The recognition of God's ultimate authority is expressed through a series of specific titles. He is called the Great God because He encompasses every cause and effect in existence, and the Mighty One due to His absolute ability to override the laws of nature and perform miracles [מלבי״ם]. Yet, the familiar title of the Awesome One, which typically accompanies these praises, is deliberately left out. The prophet Jeremiah omitted this word because he witnessed the idol-worshipping Chaldeans celebrating and taking control of God's sanctuary. Seeing this devastation, he questioned where God's awesomeness was being shown, leading to the intentional absence of the term [רש״י, רד״ק]. Ultimately, God is recognized as the Lord of Hosts, reflecting His absolute rule and universal leadership over all the forces of creation [מלבי״ם].
