Jeremiah 32:8Sefaria

A family meeting within the walls of a prison transforms into the physical confirmation of a divine prophecy. While held in custody, Jeremiah receives a visit from his cousin offering a real estate transaction, an event that reveals God's precise intention. The cousin, Hanamel, arrives at the prison courtyard exactly as God had announced beforehand, with some suggesting that Hanamel's arrival was itself driven by a divine command [רד״ק]. He asks Jeremiah to purchase his field, explaining that Jeremiah is the closest relative and the natural heir Because of this family tie, the duty falls upon him to redeem the property and prevent it from passing into the hands of strangers [מצודת דוד].

Hanamel frames the purchase as a highly logical and secure investment. An outsider would hesitate to buy the field, knowing that the property would eventually revert to its original owners during the Jubilee year, or that another family member might step in to redeem it. However, since Jeremiah holds both the right of inheritance and the right of redemption, the land will remain in his possession permanently [מלבי״ם].

Following this exchange, Jeremiah recognizes that this event is the word of God. This raises a question about whether he had doubted his initial prophetic vision until the moment his cousin appeared. The primary approach among commentators is that prophets do not question the truth of the visions they receive. Jeremiah's uncertainty was never about the reality of the prophecy, but rather about how to interpret it. He was unsure if God was merely predicting his cousin's future request, leaving the decision to buy the land up to his own judgment, or if God was issuing a binding command. When Hanamel presented his offer using slightly different words than those God had spoken in the vision, adding practical arguments about inheritance and financial benefit, the prophet understood the truth. God's original message was not just a preview of a future conversation, but an explicit order to fulfill the duty of redeeming the land [מלבי״ם]. Through this unfolding of events, it became completely clear to Jeremiah's mind that purchasing the field was God's true will
