Jeremiah 32:33Sefaria

The relationship between God and the people became defined by an intentional communication breakdown. Despite continuous and dedicated efforts to guide the nation toward the right path, the people actively evaded Him and absolutely refused to internalize His moral message.

The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic through the lens of everyday human relationships. Just as a person might stubbornly turn away from a friend to avoid hearing what they have to say, the people deliberately turned their backs on God [מצודת דוד]. This evasion did not happen randomly. The people actively turned away precisely at the moments when God was reaching out to bring them back to the proper path [מלבי״ם].

Despite this blatant rejection, His attempts to educate the nation never ceased. The people were constantly provided with divine guidance [רש״י]. This continuous education was delivered through the true prophets They did not arrive with a one-time warning; rather, they delivered their guidance with great diligence, urgency, and unwavering persistence

Ultimately, these tireless efforts were met with absolute apathy. The people's refusal to engage reflects the profound depth of their wickedness [אברבנאל]. They did not merely reject the correction meant to straighten their behavior [מצודת דוד]. Instead, they avoided the very act of listening altogether, knowing that true, open listening is the only way to absorb a moral lesson and change one's actions [מלבי״ם].
