ירמיהו, פרק ל״ב, פסוק ט״ז

Jeremiah 32:16Sefaria

In the heart of besieged Jerusalem, just moments before its destruction, the prophet completes a deeply puzzling real estate transaction commanded by God. Only after the purchase is entirely finalized does he turn to God in prayer. The primary approach among commentators focuses on the significance of this timing. By praying after the transaction rather than before, the prophet demonstrates absolute obedience to God. Had he asked questions or raised concerns prior to completing the deal, observers might have assumed he was complaining, hesitating, or simply trying to avoid spending his money on a doomed plot of land [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Instead, he carries out the instruction perfectly, willingly spending his funds on property he knows he will not get to keep. Only after the purchase is complete and the open portion of the deed is handed over does he finally pour out his heart [אברבנאל]. This unsealed section is specifically noted because it serves as the primary legal document [מצודת דוד].

Having proven his loyalty through action, the prophet turns to God in a state of profound distress and astonishment. He acknowledges that God, the creator of heaven and earth, knows all hidden truths and is fully aware that the Israelites are destined for exile. This reality prompts a glaring question: why command the purchase of this field at all [צאינה וראינה]? His prayer stems from a deep theological and logical review of the situation. He mentally examines every possible reason the city might be saved and systematically dismisses them. He knows God is fully aware of the enemy siege, that nothing limits His power to enact punishment, that He carefully watches human behavior, and that the impending destruction is a completely just consequence for the sins of the people.

With the absolute certainty that no natural or miraculous intervention will prevent the city from falling, the prophet's internal conflict peaks. From a practical standpoint, the money appears to have been spent for nothing, and the witnesses who signed the document will soon be dragged into exile. The ultimate purpose of his prayer is to ask God to explain the meaning behind this seemingly illogical command. By seeking an answer, he hopes to awaken God's mercy, looking for a hidden, positive purpose and the promise of a better future for the nation [אברבנאל].
