Jeremiah 32:12Sefaria

Following the formal drafting and signing of a property deed, the document must be securely stored to establish the public and historical legality of the purchase. Jeremiah takes the newly executed documents and hands them over for safekeeping. While the account mentions a single deed, it actually refers to both the sealed and the open documents created earlier in the transaction; the narrative simply focuses on the primary contract Jeremiah entrusts these vital records to Baruch son of Neriah, his personal scribe and secretary [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This choice of guardian is highly deliberate. Baruch is destined to outlive Jeremiah by many decades, surviving until the era when the exiles return from Babylon. At that future time, Baruch will be able to present these very deeds of ownership to Jeremiah's heirs [מלבי״ם].

During this transfer, a familial detail stands out. Hanamel, who was previously identified as Jeremiah's cousin, is suddenly referred to as his uncle. The primary approach among commentators is that the term "uncle" is used loosely here to mean "cousin," much like Abraham famously referred to his nephew Lot as a brother Expanding on this, because Hanamel is selling the field through the inheritance of his father, and Jeremiah is purchasing it through the redemption rights of his uncle, Hanamel essentially stands in his father's place and assumes his title for this transaction [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, there may have been two distinct individuals named Hanamel present at the gathering: the cousin who actually sold the field, and the uncle who simply attended the event A third possibility, suggesting that complex intermarriages within the family made Hanamel both an uncle and a cousin at the same time, is raised but ultimately rejected [רש״י].

The entire legal transfer is conducted in a highly public forum. It takes place directly in front of the witnesses who actively sign their names to the deed, thereby granting the sale its full legal authority Moreover, the transaction is finalized simultaneously in the presence of all the Judeans gathered there [ביאור שטיינזלץ], ensuring that every group witnesses the historic purchase together [מצודת דוד].
