Preserving property deeds serves as a physical symbol of hope and future redemption for a nation standing on the brink of exile. God commands the prophet to safeguard these legal documents to comfort the people of Israel, assuring them that their banishment is not permanent and that they will eventually return to their land, fields, and homes [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. While it might seem pointless to hide property records when the entire nation is being driven away, the divine instruction makes it clear that this act is not in vain. Storing these documents serves as a lasting testimony and a concrete sign for the future [רש״י].

The preservation involves two distinct types of records. The first is a sealed deed, securely closed with its official stamp [מצודת דוד]. There is an approach suggesting that this sealed document also symbolically hints at the book of Commandments and laws, which was similarly sealed [רד״ק]. Alongside this is an open, unsealed deed. Both documents must be stored away, as neither will be needed in the immediate future, but only after a significant amount of time has passed [מלבי״ם].

To ensure their survival, the documents are placed inside a clay jar. In ancient times, legal records were written on leather or parchment scrolls, which required a dry environment to prevent them from rotting or growing mold. A tightly sealed earthen vessel protects its contents from decay and can preserve delicate scrolls for thousands of years [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The ultimate goal is for these records to endure and remain intact [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] over a long period. They will wait safely until the exiles return, fulfilling the prophecy that houses and fields will once again be purchased in the land of Israel [רד״ק].
