The fall of Jerusalem to the Chaldeans is not merely a military defeat but a precise divine punishment directed at the city's centers of idolatry. The besieging army will break directly into the city [מצודת דוד] and set it on fire [מצודת ציון]. This destruction focuses heavily on the sites where the most public acts of idol worship took place. The flames will specifically target the largest and tallest houses in the city [רד״ק]. These prominent structures are singled out because the residents used their roofs as elevated platforms for foreign worship [מצודת דוד].

Atop these high roofs, the people performed their rituals by burning meat or incense [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and pouring liquid offerings [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. The true severity of these actions lies in the underlying intention. The people did not mistakenly believe that these idols held any real power, knowing perfectly well that the statues were useless. Instead, their worship was a calculated act of rebellion, performed deliberately for the sole purpose of angering God [מצודת דוד].
