וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ וַיִּֽרְשׁ֣וּ אֹתָ֗הּ וְלֹֽא־שָׁמְע֤וּ בְקוֹלֶ֙ךָ֙ (ובתרותך) [וּבְתוֹרָתְךָ֣] לֹא־הָלָ֔כוּ אֵת֩ כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוִּ֧יתָה לָהֶ֛ם לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת לֹ֣א עָשׂ֑וּ וַתַּקְרֵ֣א אֹתָ֔ם אֵ֥ת כׇּל־הָרָעָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

The arrival and settlement in the Promised Land were ultimately defined by a tragic sense of ingratitude. After the Israelites successfully inherited the land, they chose to ignore God's commands. This persistent refusal to listen to His voice or fulfill His commandments was the direct cause of the terrible disaster that eventually fell upon them as a punishment for their actions [מלבי״ם, צאינה וראינה].

The laws that the people abandoned carry a profound depth in their design. Though God's teachings are made up of a vast multitude of individual commandments and intricate details, they are meant to be understood as a single, indivisible entity. The entire body of law functions as one complete and unified whole [רד״ק].

When the resulting punishment finally arrived, it was entirely orchestrated and brought about by God [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The catastrophe carried a dual nature in how it was perceived. From the perspective of the people suffering through it, the disaster seemed like a stroke of terrible luck, appearing as nothing more than a random and tragic coincidence [מלבי״ם]. In reality, however, the ruin was not a blind accident or a natural twist of fate. It was a highly deliberate event, guided by exact divine providence, which God purposefully directed against them [רד״ק].
