ירמיהו, פרק ל״ב, פסוק כ״ו

Jeremiah 32:26Sefaria

וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ לֵאמֹֽר׃

God responds to Jeremiah’s prayer with a message that weaves together divine providence, strict judgment, and future hope [אברבנאל]. He makes it clear to the prophet that His supreme and exalted nature does not distance Him from human affairs. Unlike the sinners who wrongly claim that God has abandoned the earth, He actively watches over humanity and is fully aware of their actions. Because He is the God of all flesh, absolutely no detail escapes His attention.

Addressing the immediate reality, God confirms that the city will indeed fall to the Chaldeans. The vast amount of the people's sins has provoked His anger, which has not yet subsided, making the upcoming destruction inevitable. Yet, intertwined with this harsh judgment is a deliberate promise of comfort. The earlier instruction for Jeremiah to purchase a field was a powerful symbol of hope for the nation. By buying the land, the prophet tangibly demonstrates that the impending ruin and exile are not the end of the story. Ultimately, the Israelites will return to their homeland, where they will once again purchase houses and fields.
