וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ֩ וַיִּקְח֨וּ אֶֽת־יִרְמְיָ֜הוּ מֵחֲצַ֣ר הַמַּטָּרָ֗ה וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־גְּדַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ בֶּן־אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן־שָׁפָ֔ן לְהוֹצִאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־הַבָּ֑יִת וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּת֥וֹךְ הָעָֽם׃ {ס}

The release of Jeremiah from his confinement and his placement under protective care signals the early stages of a new government taking root in Judah following the destruction of Jerusalem. The narrative briefly steps back to summarize the conclusion of his release, effectively picking up the story after a lengthy description of the surrounding chaos [מצודת דוד].

In reality, the actual sequence of events was complicated by the fog of war. The ordinary Babylonian soldiers were completely unaware of their king's direct order to protect the prophet. As a result, they removed him from the courtyard of the guard, where he had been held until the city fell, and bound him in chains alongside the rest of the captives destined for exile. It was only later that Nebuzaradan discovered him among the prisoners, freed him from his chains, and transferred him to proper supervision [רד״ק].

The Babylonian officers chose to place Jeremiah in the care of Gedaliah, a decision that was far from accidental. Gedaliah had previously surrendered and aligned himself with the Chaldeans, acting directly on Jeremiah's own teachings and advice. Because of this, the Babylonians trusted Gedaliah implicitly once the city was conquered. They appointed him as the governor over the surviving population left in Judah and entrusted the newly liberated prophet into his hands [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The immediate goal of this transfer was to bring Jeremiah out to a house, a detail understood in two distinct ways. It either meant removing him from the harsh conditions of the prison courtyard and returning him to a normal civilian life where he could reside in a regular home [מצודת דוד], or it meant bringing him to the specific residence where Gedaliah himself was staying [רד״ק]. Ultimately, following his release by the military officers, Jeremiah settled down to live among the surviving remnant of his people [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
