ירמיהו, פרק ז׳, פסוק כ״ח

The prophet faces the heavy task of confronting the Israelites with their severe spiritual decline, holding up a mirror to a people deeply disconnected from their own heritage. God commands him to deliver this harsh message despite knowing in advance that they will ignore it. This serves to fulfill the duty of warning them against their sins [צאינה וראינה].

When the prophet speaks, he addresses the Israelites not as the people who stood at Mount Sinai and heard the voice of God, but as a foreign nation that never listened to Him [מצודת דוד]. The message itself is not unfamiliar to the people, and they actually recognize the truth within it [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, they behave as though they never learned [מצודת ציון] any moral discipline [מצודת דוד].

Because of this persistent behavior, faith and the truth of God have completely vanished from their hearts [מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה]. This spiritual decay is so severe that faith is entirely cut off [מצודת ציון] from their speech as well. Most people will at least speak the truth outwardly to maintain a good appearance, even if they lack sincerity inside. However, this generation has reached such a low point that they actively speak lies and do not make even a superficial effort to sound truthful [רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. Furthermore, they completely ignore all matters of faith, removing them entirely from their daily conversations [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
