Jeremiah 7:3Sefaria

A clear condition is established for the nation to remain in their homeland and maintain a relationship with God. True security does not come from the physical existence of the Temple, but rather from a deep moral and spiritual transformation. The call to improve requires an active commitment to doing good and repairing past mistakes

The primary approach among commentators is that, as a result of this moral correction, God will establish the people securely in their land and protect them from exile This promise of secure living is viewed as an act of divine preservation, sustaining the nation just as one sustains a person's life [רד״ק].

Beyond the basic promise of physical security, there is a profound spiritual dimension [מלבי״ם]. Proper behavior is an absolute requirement even before one steps into the Temple courtyard. The promise of dwelling is not merely about the people living safely in a specific location; rather, it is a promise that God will rest His own presence directly upon the people themselves. The nation is warned not to place their trust in the physical building of the Temple as a guarantee of His protection. In truth, the moral character and good deeds of the people serve as the actual sanctuary of God. Only by the merit of these actions will His presence dwell among them in holiness. As a direct result of this spiritual bond, they will earn the right to live securely in the Land of Israel forever, free from any danger of exile.
