ירמיהו, פרק ז׳, פסוק ו׳

Jeremiah 7:6Sefaria

Clear moral and religious boundaries are established by linking social corruption directly to spiritual sins. These detailed warnings do not stand alone; they form a broad picture of a society where moral decline inevitably leads to disaster. The warning against oppression specifically highlights the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. Even though exploiting any person is forbidden, these groups are mentioned because their social weakness makes them highly vulnerable to abuse [רד״ק].

Following earlier demands to practice basic justice, the sudden shift to warning against severe crimes like oppression and murder seems unusual. Normally, a warning progresses from lighter offenses to heavier ones. However, the order here is not based on the severity of the actions, but rather on a chain of cause and effect. It outlines a process where one sin drags another along with it. A society that fails to maintain basic justice will inevitably deteriorate further into active oppression and the shedding of blood [מלבי״ם].

The severity of shedding innocent blood is further amplified by its location. While murdering an innocent person is a terrible evil anywhere, the gravity of the act is magnified significantly when it occurs in the very place where the presence of God rests [רד״ק]. Finally, the warning turns to the worship of other gods, noting that such actions only bring harm to the people themselves. The primary approach among commentators is that following other gods and committing these sins does not harm God. Instead, it brings disaster upon the sinners, offering them no benefit and ultimately leading to their downfall and defeat before their enemies.
