A dangerous state of complacency has taken hold of the people, rooted in the belief that a holy structure can shield them from the consequences of their actions. God issues a severe warning that destruction is coming precisely because of this mindset. Instead of correcting their behavior, the people rely entirely on the holiness of the Temple. They allow themselves to sin freely, holding onto a false sense of security that the mere existence of the sanctuary will protect them [מלבי״ם].

As a direct result of this misplaced trust, God will bring punishment upon the very building that bears His name. The impending ruin will also extend beyond the Temple walls, though there are different perspectives on the exact reach of the devastation. The destruction may encompass the entire city of Jerusalem [מצודת דוד], while a broader understanding suggests that the ruin will spread across the entire land of Israel [מלבי״ם].

To emphasize the reality of this threat, God points to a clear historical precedent. The coming devastation will mirror the past destruction of the Tabernacle in Shiloh, which occurred during the era of Eli the Priest [רש״י]. Just as that earlier holy site fell, the current sanctuary and its surroundings are entirely vulnerable to the same fate.
