The bodies of the slain [מצודת ציון] are left entirely exposed, inevitably becoming food for scavenging birds and wild beasts. This grim fate occurs because proper burial is simply no longer possible. The sheer scale of the death toll creates an impossible situation, either because there is absolutely no physical space left in the ground or because those attempting to bury the dead are completely exhausted by the endless burden [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Adding to this tragic scene is the total abandonment of the fallen. As the animals descend upon the remains, there is a complete absence of anyone to scare or chase them away [מצודת ציון]. The commentators agree that this highlights a chilling reality: there will be no living person remaining who is able to disturb the scavengers or protect the dead.
