ויקרא, פרק ט׳, פסוק י״ד

פרשת שמיני

Leviticus 9:14Sefaria

Preparing a burnt offering for the altar involves a careful process, particularly regarding the animal's inner parts. Although it might seem that Aaron the priest performed the washing of these organs, this action is entirely valid even if done by someone who is not a priest [ביאור יש״ר, פרדס יוסף]. One perspective suggests that the owner of the offering was actually required to wash these parts himself. This task was considered part of his personal duties, much like leaning his hands on the animal, slaughtering it, and removing its skin [פרדס יוסף]. This arrangement allowed for a practical division of labor during the ceremony. While the main portions of the animal were carried to the altar, another person would simultaneously wash the internal organs and the legs, bringing them over at the very end of the procedure [ביאור יש״ר].

The physical act of washing the animal's internal organs is quite different from how a living person bathes. It is not a simple rinse; rather, it requires a deep, thorough scouring of the intestinal cavity to completely remove all accumulated waste and dirt [נתינה לגר]. Once fully cleaned, these internal parts and legs were placed on the fire. They were not burned as an isolated batch. Instead, they were added directly to the main pieces of the offering, ensuring that the entire animal was combined and consumed together on the altar as one unified offering [חזקוני, פירושי רד צ הופמן].
