A leader's ultimate legacy is defined by the sacrifices made for the public good. After detailing his profound dedication, Nehemiah turns to God with a deeply personal plea, asking Him to remember his work. He asks that his actions be viewed favorably, meaning that God should count his deeds as a lasting merit [מצודת דוד].

This request is understood in two complementary ways. On a basic level, the focus is on all the practical, good deeds Nehemiah performed directly for the benefit and welfare of the nation [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Yet, there is a much broader intention behind his prayer. He is not merely asking for personal recognition. Instead, he asks that the merit of his actions serve as a shield for the entire nation, reflecting the idea that the good deeds of a righteous leader stand as a lasting protection for the people [מלבי״ם].
