Proverbs 16:24Sefaria

Words spoken with wisdom and gentleness carry a profound, dual power that transforms a person on both a spiritual and physical level. Rather than simply being pleasant to hear, these expressions serve as educational and spiritual tools capable of penetrating the heart, bringing distant people closer, and sparking deep inner change. These pleasant words are understood as words of Torah [רש"י], or as wisdom, guidance, and moral instruction delivered in a peaceful, gentle manner [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

To understand how these words operate, they are compared to a sweet honeycomb The primary approach among commentators is that this is a direct comparison, meaning gentle words are just like sweet honey [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another perspective suggests this does not refer to physical honey made by bees, but rather to the pure spiritual sweetness that drips directly from the pleasant words themselves [עמנואל הרומי]. Regardless of the exact imagery, commentators agree that just as physical honey offers both a sweet taste and natural healing properties for bodily wounds and illnesses, words of wisdom function in the exact same manner [רלב"ג].

The impact of these words unfolds in two complementary stages. First, they provide sweetness to the soul, which represents the spiritual and intellectual part of a human being, distinct from the body [מלבי"ם]. By making the laws of wisdom appealing, gentle words draw the hearts of listeners and guide them toward learning and serving God [רלב"ג, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. Second, they bring healing to the bones. Because bones serve as the structural foundation that holds a person upright, they symbolize the entire physical body [מצודת ציון]. This healing occurs as the gentle words calm anger, correct negative character traits, and steer a person away from bad behavior. In this way, intellectual understanding connects to the physical body and actively repairs it

The influence of gentle instruction is so great that it can even reach those who have sinned, act foolishly, or normally reject moral correction. Because every human soul is carved from beneath God's heavenly throne, it naturally craves His words. When the soul tastes the sweetness of a gentle and pleasant rebuke, it accepts the message with joy. From the soul, this healing flows outward into the body and bones, curing the spiritual sickness and impurity that sins have left on the physical limbs [אלשיך, מלבי"ם].
