Proverbs 16:9Sefaria

לֵ֣ב אָ֭דָם יְחַשֵּׁ֣ב דַּרְכּ֑וֹ וַ֝יהֹוָ֗ה יָכִ֥ין צַעֲדֽוֹ׃

The delicate balance between human initiative and Divine providence sits at the center of how we experience life. People naturally calculate their plans and map out their future moves, deciding which path they wish to take. Yet, despite all human preparation, the actual execution and final outcome rest entirely in the hands of God. He is the One Who ultimately arranges and guides a person's steps toward their destination [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic as a partnership, specifically highlighting Divine assistance for positive intentions. When an individual, particularly a righteous person, resolves to follow an honest and proper path, God actively steps in to ensure they do not stumble, helping them bring their good thoughts into reality [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רלב״ג]. This support is clearly seen in acts like giving charity. Sometimes, a person deeply desires to help the poor but simply lacks the financial means. When God sees this genuine, good intention, He expands the person's livelihood and arranges the circumstances so they can fulfill their noble goal [אלשיך]. However, this partnership requires active participation. A person must work hard to earn a living rather than sitting back and waiting for a miracle, because heavenly assistance only arrives after human effort has been made [עמנואל הרומי].

Others understand this relationship not as a harmonious partnership, but as a clear display of God's absolute supremacy over human planning. Often, a person fully intends to head in one direction, only for God to lead them down a completely different path, a reality that applies to all worldly affairs [עמנואל הרומי]. Taking this a step further, some suggest that human planning can sometimes involve negative and improper thoughts. While people have the free will to choose their desired path, their physical ability to act remains under God's control. If someone plots to do evil, God can intervene, restrict their movement, and prevent them from carrying out their harmful plans against their will [מלבי״ם].

To understand these different layers of control, a distinction is drawn between the physical and moral realms. God alone dictates a person's material circumstances and worldly fate. Yet, the moral choice between good and evil is left entirely to the individual, free from any Divine coercion. Because of this complete freedom, a person is held responsible and earns either reward or punishment for their actions [עמנואל הרומי]. The profound difficulty of maintaining one's intended course against outside forces and obstacles is also mirrored in public leadership. It is considered truly remarkable when a king successfully sticks to his chosen path and decisions, refusing to be swayed by bribes or the heavy pressure of his inner circle [אמרי דעת].
