Proverbs 19:15Sefaria

עַ֭צְלָה תַּפִּ֣יל תַּרְדֵּמָ֑ה וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ רְמִיָּ֣ה תִרְעָֽב׃

Avoiding honest effort and relying on shortcuts are destructive forces that lead to total stagnation and poverty. The primary approach among commentators is that idleness triggers a natural downward spiral. A lack of productive action drains a person's energy, eventually plunging them into a deep and paralyzing slumber [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This process is a slippery slope where a small amount of laziness breeds even more lethargy, until the individual sinks into a sleep that resembles death [עמנואל הרומי]. Alongside laziness is the path of deceit, where a person hopes to survive through tricks rather than hard work. This approach inevitably ends in starvation and ruin. Deception cannot last forever; eventually, society distances itself from the fraud, or God intervenes with poverty as a punishment [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

A different perspective suggests that choosing deceit is actually worse than yielding to laziness. While both paths lead to failure, the lazy person is shielded from the immediate pain of their situation. Because their idleness puts them into a deep sleep, they remain unaware of their empty stomach. Conversely, the deceitful person stays wide awake trying to execute their schemes. When those tricks fail to provide a living, they are left to actively suffer the sharp pains of hunger [מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical survival, these concepts apply directly to intellectual and spiritual growth. A person who is lazy in their studies will eventually fall into an intellectual slumber, finding themselves completely speechless when asked to share wisdom. Similarly, deceit in the realm of study means learning superficially or studying purely to show off to others. A person with such ulterior motives will never acquire genuine understanding. The knowledge they do gain will quickly be forgotten, leaving their soul starved and empty both in this world and in the world to come [רש״י, רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי].

On a psychological level, laziness explains the gradual decline of a sinner. People rarely abandon their moral compass in a single moment. Instead, they simply become lazy, delaying the hard work of self-improvement and pushing off repentance until old age. This procrastination creates a spiritual coma, numbing them to their own negative state. However, the inner core of the soul remains pure and desperately hungers for the spiritual nourishment of God's commandments. This deep and hidden starvation explains a fascinating phenomenon. Sometimes, individuals who appear completely disconnected from a spiritual life will suddenly leap into action to fulfill a commandment. In that moment, it is simply their starving soul finally snatching the food it so desperately needs [אלשיך].
