Proverbs 19:16Sefaria

שֹׁמֵ֣ר מִ֭צְוָה שֹׁמֵ֣ר נַפְשׁ֑וֹ בּוֹזֵ֖ה דְרָכָ֣יו (יומת) [יָמֽוּת]׃

Human choices carry profound consequences, creating a clear equation between guarding one's life and facing the danger of destruction through carelessness. The primary approach among commentators is that fulfilling God's commandments straightens a person, repairs both body and soul, and ultimately saves them from death. Because people frequently stand at crossroads, unable to independently distinguish the path of life from the path of death, the commandment serves as a vital guide directing them toward the correct route [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג]. This protective power extends beyond divine law; following the rules of earthly kings and judges also shields a person from worldly troubles [עמנואל הרומי]. Taking a completely different approach, one perspective views this dynamic through the lens of a sinner who, driven by a sudden spiritual hunger, occasionally seizes the opportunity to perform a commandment. By doing so, he preserves and breathes life back into his stained soul [אלשיך].

In stark contrast stands the individual who shows contempt for his paths. Many commentators explain that this refers to someone who rejects straight and proper ways, choosing instead to follow his own stubborn desires [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or someone who degrades himself through vile and immoral behavior [עמנואל הרומי]. Contempt can also manifest as mere carelessness, where a person acts hastily without pausing to weigh or consider his actions [רש״י]. Alternatively, the contempt might be directed upward, referring to a person who disrespects the ways of God or the authority of a judge [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. Continuing his unique interpretation, another view suggests that the one showing contempt is actually a person who mocks the aforementioned sinner, ridiculing his sincere attempts to perform a commandment and draw closer to goodness [אלשיך].

The ultimate consequence for such disdain carries a dual meaning based on how the punishment is traditionally written and read [מנחת שי]. When read as a natural demise, it points to a premature death at the hands of Heaven, brought about by foolishness or as a direct punishment from God [אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. This can also be understood as a spiritual death, where the soul is entirely cut off from the source of life [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. However, the written form of the tradition implies an active execution, hinting at a punishment delivered by human hands. If an individual openly and publicly shows contempt for the path of the commandments, it is the earthly court that will sentence him to death [אבן עזרא].
