תהלים, פרק נ״ה, פסוק א׳

Psalms 55:1Sefaria

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ בִּנְגִינֹ֗ת מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִֽד׃

David faced one of the darkest periods of his life when he was forced to flee Jerusalem during the rebellion of his son, Absalom. The primary approach among commentators is that his attention during this crisis was consumed by a devastating piece of news: his trusted advisor, Ahithophel, had joined the traitors. Knowing Ahithophel's sharp intellect and strategic wisdom, David was overcome with fear. In response, he turned to God, pleading with Him to ruin the advisor's plans [מאירי]. Ultimately, his prayer centers heavily on the hope for Ahithophel's complete downfall and final ruin [מלבי״ם].

The dual trauma of betrayal and exile plunged David into a deep sadness. This emotional state created a spiritual barrier, as divine inspiration cannot rest upon someone who is consumed by sorrow. To overcome this, David needed a way to awaken joy within himself. By turning to musical instruments, he was able to lift his spirits. Only through this renewed sense of joy could divine inspiration once again rest upon him, allowing him to receive heavenly wisdom and compose his prayer [אלשיך].
