תהלים, פרק נ״ה, פסוק י״ז

Psalms 55:17Sefaria

אֲ֭נִי אֶל־אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֶקְרָ֑א וַ֝יהֹוָ֗ה יוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃

Facing life-threatening danger and a great multitude rising against him, a solitary individual finds his absolute response in prayer and trust in God. A sharp contrast exists between the isolated poet and the united front of his enemies. While they are many and have joined forces, he stands entirely alone, choosing to turn to God with the deep belief that He will deliver him [רד״ק].

As he watches his enemies exert great effort to harm him, his immediate reaction is to immerse himself completely in prayer [מאירי]. In truth, reaching out to God is the only action left in his power to take [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Fueled by this unwavering trust, he is no longer afraid, even if his oppressors continue to live and cause trouble. He remains fully confident that God and His heavenly court will ultimately step in to save him [אלשיך]. Therefore, he commits to crying out to God continuously, without pause, until the moment his enemies face their punishment and are brought down alive into the grave [אבן עזרא].

Within the historical context of these events, this declaration of faith occurs at a critical turning point. King David expresses his certainty that following the death of his former advisor Ahithophel, God will undoubtedly hear his prayers and rescue him from the looming war against Absalom [מלבי״ם].
