Prayer is not merely a sequence of spoken words, but a profound internal journey that begins in the mind and heart before finding expression on the lips. In moments of deep distress, a person naturally cries out for help [מצודת דוד], sometimes from the specific pain of feeling exiled and lost [רש״י]. Often, this desperate call happens only after an individual has sought help from every other power in the world. When all worldly avenues fail to answer, the person finally turns exclusively to God [מלבי״ם]. In this state of vulnerability, one might not even know what to say, prompting a sincere request for God to provide the right words and essentially guide their very speech [אלשיך].

Alongside this desperate plea is a constant readiness to praise God's majesty. This praise is so deeply ingrained that it sits constantly prepared, waiting to be spoken aloud [רש״י]. While this readiness involves the physical mechanics of speech and the way the tongue forms words [רד״ק, מאירי], it also points to a much deeper, hidden space within the individual.

Beyond the physical act of speaking, this readiness represents the inner world of the heart and mind [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. It captures the quiet moment when a thought is still entirely internal, existing as pure potential before it is ever shaped into physical sound by the lips [מלבי״ם]. This internal stage reveals a beautiful truth about the connection between humanity and the Divine. Even while a request or a song of praise remains only a silent thought, entirely unspoken, God is already listening intimately and answering the prayer [אלשיך].
