Psalms 66:2Sefaria

Praising the Divine requires more than just lifting a voice in song; it demands a deep recognition of God's greatness and the way He guides the world. The call to sing is an instruction to recount His glory through melody [רש״י] and to actively remember His wonders [מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that God must be praised with the distinct honor that truly befits His name This recognition is rooted in understanding God as the ultimate Creator and the cause of all causes, a realization that inherently obligates humanity to grant Him the highest level of reverence [מלבי״ם].

From a historical perspective, this outpouring of song serves as a public declaration. It announces that God's name is elevated and honored following the redemption of Israel. This acts as a direct correction to the dark periods of exile, a time when His name was subjected to the scorn and mockery of other nations [רד״ק].

When considering how to elevate this praise, commentators offer varying perspectives. One approach views the call for glorious praise as an emphasis on the duty to publicly broadcast God's honor to the entire world Conversely, another perspective suggests that this dynamic of honor is not only directed upward toward God, but also reflects back downward. In this view, the act of offering praise becomes a source of honor for the people themselves; by elevating God, they are in turn elevated and granted dignity

A deeper dimension of this praise emerges when confronting the harsh realities of exile and divine judgment. The hardships and subjugation experienced by the people were ultimately designed for their spiritual benefit. Therefore, when foreign nations prosper and God appears to remain silent, one must not mistake this for a weakness or a lack of divine capability. Instead, believers are challenged to understand that God's immense patience, even when His leadership seems to lack outward glory, is in fact the ultimate expression of His true honor and praise [אלשיך].
