תהלים, פרק ע״ד, פסוק י״ג

Psalms 74:13Sefaria

Divine intervention in history is most powerfully seen through God's absolute control over nature. This is perfectly illustrated by the splitting of the Red Sea, an event that altered the natural order of creation to deliver ultimate justice [מאירי, מלבי״ם]. Using His immense power and might [שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד], God completely shattered the sea into many pieces [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators is that this refers directly to the miraculous events of the Exodus. The sea was not merely split in two; it was divided into twelve distinct sections, creating a unique, dry path for each of the tribes of Israel [מצודת דוד]. This miracle was twofold: while the waters gave way to form dry land for the Israelites, they simultaneously surged to drown the pursuing Egyptians [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this display of power can be understood more broadly as a general testament to God's ultimate authority over the oceans and all the creatures within them [אבן עזרא].

The imagery of crushing the heads of great sea creatures serves as a profound metaphor within this historical event. While it literally refers to massive fish or marine animals [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון], commentators agree that it represents the Egyptian empire. Specifically, these creatures symbolize Pharaoh, his ministers, and his top military commanders, echoing the prophet Ezekiel who also referred to Pharaoh as a great sea monster [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. This metaphor carries deep historical and religious significance. The Egyptians worshipped the Nile River and the creatures within it, believing that their national strength flowed directly from these waters. By defeating them specifically upon the water, God exposed the complete emptiness of their beliefs [מלבי״ם].

The destruction of these leaders extended beyond the physical realm. The crushing defeat included not only the earthly army but also the spiritual guardian angel of Egypt in heaven, who fell alongside the military forces [אלשיך]. Physically, the details of their end were severe. During the miracle, the waters of the sea hardened, becoming as solid as rock. As the Egyptians drowned, they were thrown with tremendous force against these rigid walls of water, which ultimately crushed them [מצודת דוד].
