אָמְר֣וּ בְ֭לִבָּם נִינָ֣ם יָ֑חַד שָׂרְפ֖וּ כׇל־מוֹעֲדֵי־אֵ֣ל בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

The enemies of Israel do not merely seek physical conquest; they calculate a unified plot to sever the profound connection between the people and God. Their strategy focuses on systematically destroying the sacred spaces where the nation gathers. The leaders and rulers of these enemy nations assemble with a single purpose: to strike at God first, and subsequently destroy Israel [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. This plot is deeply rooted in a desire to oppress, inflict pain, and ultimately wipe out the nation [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A deeper motive drives this cruelty, as the enemies fear the true strength of Israel, which stems from their united voice and collective prayer. To break them, the adversaries scheme to prevent the people from assembling together [אלשיך].

The devastation stretches on for such an extended period that even the descendants of these enemies participate in the cruelty. These later generations boast about burning the sacred sites, proudly claiming that God no longer has any resting place on earth [מלבי״ם, מאירי].

To execute their plan, the enemies set fire to the sacred meeting places. While some view this destruction as targeting the Temple alone [רד״ק], the primary approach among commentators is that it encompasses a much wider scope of holy sites throughout history. This includes the Tabernacle at Shiloh destroyed by the Philistines, the First Temple destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, and the Second Temple [רש״י]. It also extends to all the synagogues and houses of study established in later generations, which serve as vital centers for gathering and uniting in prayer [מצודת דוד, אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
