The vision of the giant statue draws the eye downward along its body, finally resting on the foundation upon which the entire figure stands. As the gaze descends, a clear shift occurs from strong, uniform materials to a divided and fragile mixture.

To fully grasp the structure of the statue's lower limbs, they must be viewed in three distinct sections [מלבי״ם]. The upper portion, the thighs, was established earlier in the vision as being formed of copper. Moving down to the middle section, the lower legs are forged entirely of iron. Finally, the structure reaches its lowest point, the feet [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Unlike the solid sections above them, the feet are composed of an uneven blend of materials, specifically a mix of strong iron and fragile clay [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators notes that this base is not a single, unified mass. Furthermore, the division of materials is not split between the two limbs. It is not a case of one foot being made of iron and the other of clay. Instead, each individual foot is itself a patchwork, built from an unstable combination of partly iron and partly clay [מצודת דוד].
