Daniel describes a massive human figure appearing before the monarch [מצודת דוד, יוסף אבן יחיא]. The primary approach among commentators is that Daniel emphasizes the immediate presence of the statue [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, [רש״י] suggests that the figure was notable for standing upon a massive base or foundation.

The description repeatedly highlights the immense size of the figure and uses present language to describe a dream from the past. [מלבי״ם] explains this vividness dramatically. As Daniel began to recount the dream, the vision actually reappeared before Nebuchadnezzar's open eyes. Recognizing what was happening, Daniel spoke as if the statue were standing directly in front of the king at that very moment.

As the figure stood before the king, Daniel detailed three of its powerful features. First, it possessed a greatness that went beyond mere physical size.
