דניאל, פרק ב׳, פסוק י״ז

Daniel 2:17Sefaria

In moments of severe crisis, when a harsh decree hangs in the balance, the first step of great individuals is to pull away from the noise of the world and turn inward. Following the Babylonian king's decree to destroy the wise men, Daniel acts immediately. Although he is typically occupied with matters at the king's gate, he abandons his regular daily routine to avoid any distractions [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. His retreat home is a deliberate move toward isolation. He seeks to disconnect from his surroundings in order to pray and seek God [מצודת דוד], preparing himself spiritually so that divine inspiration might rest upon him [מלבי״ם].

Daniel does not face this trial alone. He shares the news of the king's decree with his close companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah [מצודת דוד]. This is not merely a transfer of information; it serves a practical and spiritual purpose. Daniel calls his friends to join him in isolation, hoping that through their own spiritual preparation, divine inspiration will rest upon them as well [מלבי״ם]. Their shared goal is to pray and beg God for mercy to reveal the secret of the king's dream, thereby saving them from perishing alongside the rest of the Babylonian wise men [יוסף אבן יחיא].

This gathering reflects the deeper response of the righteous during times of distress. They accept and justify the divine judgment, yet they still cry out to God from the depths of their hardship. Furthermore, their prayer is not driven solely by a desire for personal survival. They are deeply concerned with God's honor, praying for salvation to prevent a situation where the wicked might witness the downfall of the upright and conclude that serving God is ultimately pointless [אלשיך].
