Daniel 2:2Sefaria

Plunged into distress by a troubling nighttime vision, the King of Babylon summons the absolute elite of his empire's wise men and magicians. Rather than calling upon his engineers or architects, he carefully selects four distinct groups of experts, each possessing a specific skill set that might illuminate the source of his dreams [אבן עזרא]. Broadly, these men represent various ranks of religious priests and advisors dedicated to fortune-telling and dream interpretation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The first group consists of naturalists and theoretical thinkers [יוסף אבן יחיא] who understand the inner workings of the human mind and how it generates visions during sleep [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. The second group comprises physicians and practical thinkers They examine a person's physical health through pulse and bodily fluids, knowing that many dreams are directly triggered by the body's physical state The third group focuses on manipulating nature and creating illusions, attempting to uncover hidden truths by consulting the dead or harnessing specific hours tied to celestial bodies Finally, the fourth group is made up of astrologers who predict the future based on the movement of the stars. These men were intimately familiar with the exact time of the king's birth and his personal astrological chart

Regarding the specific message sent to these experts, there are differing views on what they were told before arriving at the palace. One perspective suggests that the king intentionally kept his summons vague so the wise men would assume he merely wanted them to interpret a dream he had already experienced. Had he revealed upfront that he had forgotten the dream entirely and expected them to reconstruct it from their own minds, they would have undoubtedly fled in fear [חומת אנך]. Another approach argues that the royal messengers informed them in advance that they would need to discover the actual content of the dream. According to this view, the king gave them prior notice so they could prepare quietly in their own homes, consulting their books and instruments far away from his terrifying presence, which might otherwise confuse their thinking [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, the arrival of these wise men at the palace exposes their deep pride and foolishness. Even though they were being asked to perform a task that was entirely beyond human capability, they made no attempt to avoid the summons or admit their helplessness. Instead, they marched into the palace and stood confidently before the king, waiting for his command. By doing so, they put on a false display of total control, pretending that their human wisdom was fully prepared to meet his impossible demand [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
