Daniel 2:43Sefaria

A fragile political and social reality often emerges when opposing elements are forced together. The imagery of clay pottery mixed with iron serves as a powerful metaphor for this instability The primary approach among commentators is that this mixing refers to intermarriage and treaties between different nations, particularly between powerful empires and weaker states. The goal behind these unions is strictly political and military. Weaker nations attempt to attach themselves to stronger ones to gain protection and support against common enemies

These alliances try to bind together peoples who are completely different from one another in their physical appearance, clothing, diet, customs, and, above all, their religion Despite these strategic marriages and pacts, there is no true unity, love, or wholehearted connection between the groups The result is a fractured kingdom made of various mixtures, entirely lacking in stability [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. People of different backgrounds and languages continue to view and treat each other as strangers [אלשיך].

Beyond the social alienation, a deep political deception lies beneath the surface. These treaties are made with hidden motives. In reality, the stronger party secretly plots to swallow the weaker side and bring it under absolute control [מלבי״ם]. The choice of iron and clay perfectly captures this message. While earlier these materials symbolized mere strength and weakness, the focus now shifts to the actual people within the kingdom. Iron and clay represent absolute opposites. Just as these two materials can never truly fuse, the nations making up this kingdom will never successfully merge into a single, unified people, regardless of any artificial attempts to connect them [אלשיך].
