Deuteronomy 25:16Sefaria

כִּ֧י תוֹעֲבַ֛ת יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ כׇּל־עֹ֣שֵׂה אֵ֑לֶּה כֹּ֖ל עֹ֥שֵׂה עָֽוֶל׃ {פ}

Absolute integrity in commerce and human relations forms the bedrock of a moral society, but its significance extends far beyond mere social order. It is a profound religious imperative. Compromising one's moral purity severs the direct connection between a person and their Creator. Justice is not simply a civic duty; it is a fundamental religious obligation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A person who uses deceitful weights and measures forfeits the moral right to call God their God [רש״ר הירש]. Exploiting measurements is considered an abomination because it represents a deep, essential flaw in God's eyes, distinct from commandments that stem directly from the memory of the Exodus [מלבי״ם]. The promise of a long life is directly tied to this level of integrity. Just as committing an injustice is an abomination, strictly adhering to honest practices—which might appear to be a minor commandment—brings immense satisfaction to God and earns the great reward of a long life [שפתי כהן].

The condemnation of deceit applies to any use of false weights and measures, and guilt is incurred even if only a single infraction is committed The severity of financial fraud is strikingly profound, carrying a wider scope of damage than even severe sexual prohibitions. While sexual sins represent a breach between humanity and God for which complete repentance is possible, deceiving the public creates an irreversible rupture. A merchant who cheats the masses can never truly repent, because they do not know exactly who they have stolen from and cannot return the stolen funds. Even if the fraudster attempts to atone by donating their ill-gotten gains to public causes, their repentance remains forever incomplete, as the money never reaches its rightful owners

This strict standard of honesty expands far beyond physical measuring tools. It encompasses every conceivable form of injustice and fraud, whether involving money or other matters, whether done in secret or in public, and whether committed through speech or action The prohibition includes any act resembling the falsification of weights [אור החיים], and even the mere possession of inaccurate weights in one's home, even if they have not yet been used [העמק דבר]. Furthermore, the restriction applies to deception that causes no direct financial loss to the buyer. For instance, a merchant who mixes old and new produce, or blends different qualities of goods without the buyer noticing, is guilty of an injustice simply through the act of deception and the concealment of information Psychologically, a person who accustoms themselves to minor falsifications will eventually commit greater injustices, leading to conflict born from an unwillingness to compromise [מלבי״ם].

The profound severity of deceit is deeply connected to the commandment to eradicate Amalek. Just as Amalek committed a grave injustice and hated Israel without any logical reason, and just as there is a perpetual commandment to record and remember Amalek's deeds, God permanently records and remembers the injustices committed by a fraudster
