פרשת ואתחנן

Deuteronomy 6:3Sefaria

וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֣ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁר֙ יִיטַ֣ב לְךָ֔ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּרְבּ֖וּן מְאֹ֑ד כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבֶּ֨ר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י אֲבֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ לָ֔ךְ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ {פ}

Following God's laws is not merely a religious duty, but a precise formula for a complete life where spiritual focus and material prosperity work together perfectly. Addressing the nation directly speaks to a person who has already reached a high spiritual level [העמק דבר]. The call to listen and act requires understanding that God's intentions are rooted in immense kindness. By engaging with these instructions out of love, a person sets themselves on the path to eternal happiness [ספורנו].

The commandments were given specifically to bring goodness to humanity [רמב״ן, ביאור יש״ר]. Because God desires to grant pleasure and goodness even in this present world, focusing on acts of kindness is especially beneficial, as these actions produce immediate results [העמק דבר]. Anticipating a reward for doing what is right is entirely appropriate, provided the deeper goal is to allow God to fulfill His ultimate desire to shower His creations with blessing. This divine promise covers three fundamental human needs: a high quality of life, a growing family, and a stable livelihood [מלבי״ם]. Such growth and success become a reality when the people strictly commit to charity and justice in order to honor God [ספורנו].

The reward of a long life is not just about surviving for many years; it is designed to provide the time and peace of mind necessary to learn and perform good deeds [מלבי״ם]. The promise of an exceptionally fertile land is deeply woven into this vision. It represents God's historical vow to grant the territory, the specific location where this success will unfold, and the broader inheritance of the nation [בכור שור, חזקוני, הטור הארוך, אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, מלבי״ם]. Yet, the essence of this place goes far beyond material wealth. It was prepared specifically for those who serve God, allowing them to earn a comfortable living without sorrow. This security frees their time for intellectual growth, positive actions, and raising families [ספורנו, ביאור יש״ר]. As long as the people maintain their moral integrity, God ensures all their needs are met [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, the physical pleasures found in this abundance are not an end in themselves. They serve as a metaphor and tangible proof of the true spiritual joy, and the unity of God, that thrive within its borders [רבנו בחיי, פענח רזא].
