Exodus 36:2Sefaria

The transition from harsh slavery to delicate artistry required a profound mental shift for the Israelites. Having spent their lives in Egypt performing simple, backbreaking labor with mortar and bricks, they had never learned fine or complex crafts [מלבי״ם]. Gathering artisans for the construction of the Tabernacle therefore demanded a unique combination of divine inspiration, personal initiative, and a willingness to step into the unknown. The wisdom granted by God was not a sudden infusion of prior professional knowledge. Instead, it manifested as a deep sense of self-confidence, inner passion, and the courage necessary to take on such a demanding task

Stepping forward to perform the actual labor was an act of complete volunteering, driven by the same generous spirit that motivated the donation of physical materials [קאסוטו]. The clear sign that a person had received this divine wisdom was a powerful internal drive. Anyone who felt their heart lifting them to approach the work could be certain that God had gifted them the required talent [מלבי״ם]. This divine gift functioned on two levels: it enabled the artisans to mentally grasp the intricate designs, while simultaneously granting their completely untrained fingers the physical ability to execute the work perfectly [העמק דבר].

Because the people lacked any practical experience, the construction process began with great caution. The artisans who felt the inner urge to participate did not immediately start working on the final pieces. Instead, they first tested their new abilities by creating small-scale models of the Tabernacle's components, such as a miniature curtain or a small wooden board. Once they saw their own success and proved their capabilities, they brought these trial pieces to Moses. Only after Moses reviewed and approved their work did he officially call upon them, handing over the valuable materials needed to execute the full project [חתם סופר].
