Exodus 36:20Sefaria

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־הַקְּרָשִׁ֖ים לַמִּשְׁכָּ֑ן עֲצֵ֥י שִׁטִּ֖ים עֹמְדִֽים׃

The construction of the holy tent's walls required a blend of architectural precision and profound symbolic meaning. On a practical level, the physical walls were crafted from sanded acacia wood. These boards were positioned to stand completely upright, mirroring the exact vertical way the trees naturally grew in the earth [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The account of crafting these boards closely follows the original instructions given by God, with only minor shifts in language. However, there is a distinct difference in focus. While the initial commands included the actual assembly and erection of the structure, the current narrative intentionally leaves out the building phase. At this stage, the focus remains strictly on the manufacturing process and the preparation of the physical materials [קאסוטו].

Beyond the woodwork, the Tabernacle held a deeper spiritual purpose as a form of collateral or a pledge for the Israelites. If the people were to sin and face total destruction, God would instead exact payment from the physical building. The structure would be destroyed in their place, allowing the nation to survive. This concept of a protective pledge extends even into eras where the Israelites have no standing Tabernacle or Temple. During those times, the righteous individuals of the generation serve as the collateral, passing away to atone for the sins of the broader public [רא״ש].
