וַיְהִ֛י בְּעַשְׁתֵּֽי־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָ֥ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Tyre, a powerful neighboring trading empire, watched the fall of Jerusalem with eager anticipation. Viewing Jerusalem as an economic rival, Tyre rejoiced at its destruction, hoping to take over its merchants and trade routes. In response, God directed a prophecy of wrath against the city [אברבנאל, רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

The timing of this divine message is highly significant. It was delivered during the eleventh year of King Zedekiah's reign, which was also the eleventh year since King Jehoiachin was sent into exile [רש״י, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. This was the exact year that Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed, providing the direct and immediate backdrop for the prophecy [רד״ק, שטיינזלץ].

Although the date specifies the year and the first day of the month, the actual name of the month is missing. The primary approach among commentators is that this omission is tied to the prophecy's close connection to the fall of Jerusalem. Many conclude that it was the month of Av, the very month the destruction took place. Just as the year is defined by the tragedy, the month is naturally understood from this context [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

Others suggest the prophecy was given slightly later, perhaps in the following month [שטיינזלץ], or during the subsequent months of Elul or Tishrei. By that time, Tyre's joy over Jerusalem's downfall had become entirely obvious [מלבי״ם]. A different perspective offers a simpler explanation, suggesting the prophecy was delivered on the very first day of the new year. According to this view, simply mentioning the year implies its very beginning, making it unnecessary to name the month [חומת אנך].
