Ezekiel 4:13Sefaria

God reveals the deep meaning behind the difficult task given to the prophet. The act of baking a barley cake serves as a powerful sign of the future waiting for the Israelites when they are sent into exile. Barley is a grain usually fed to animals, and eating it illustrates the extreme low point the people will reach during their time away from their homeland [מלבי״ם]. The preparation of this food carries an even harsher message. Just as the prophet was instructed to bake his food over human waste, making it completely repulsive, the Israelites will be forced to eat ruined and disgusting food in the lands where they are scattered [מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that the impurity of this food goes beyond strict religious laws. It represents a state of being deeply abominable and rejected. The difficult reality of living in exile will make it impossible for the people to keep their food clean. They will be unable to protect their meals from the impurity of the foreign nations surrounding them This entire experience is rooted in the act of being driven out of their land, a forced removal that represents God actively pushing the people away and distancing them from Him [מצודת ציון].
