Ezra 10:15Sefaria

The momentous public decision to separate from foreign wives did not pass without the active involvement of key figures who took a firm stance on the matter. However, the exact nature of the roles played by Jonathan and Jahzeiah is a subject of fundamental debate.

One perspective views their involvement as active opposition. According to this approach, these men stood against the community's decision, seeking to provoke conflict and stir up disagreement [רש״י]. From this angle, their isolation is highlighted; they were the only two men, along with their two assistants, who resisted the plan, while the rest of the nation fully agreed to the expulsion [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, an opposing viewpoint suggests that Jonathan and Jahzeiah were actually strong supporters of the decree. Rather than resisting, they strengthened their resolve and made a great effort to advance the cause, working diligently to ensure the separation from the foreign wives was successfully executed

Regardless of whether they were resisting the public will or leading the charge to enforce it, Jonathan and Jahzeiah did not act alone. Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite stepped in to support them, backing their efforts and assisting them in whichever stance they took
