Genesis 11:1Sefaria

In the early days of humanity following the great flood, the world experienced a rare moment of absolute global unity. People shared not only a common means of communication but also a single worldview and purpose. The primary approach among commentators is that this universal speech was the Holy Language, Hebrew, the original language of creation spoken by the first humans Others suggest that while multiple languages may have already existed, humanity agreed to adopt this sacred language as a universal tongue for their grand building project [תורה תמימה], or perhaps everyone was simply fluent in all seventy languages of the world [בכור שור].

Beyond sharing a common tongue, the people operated with a profound unity of thought. They acted as a single entity, bound by one agreement and a shared counsel without any internal disputes Initially, this reflected a simple and peaceful way of life, where people had few needs and communicated using clear, natural concepts before the invention of artificial and technological terms [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. However, this seemingly ideal harmony soon transformed into a rebellion. The people began to speak against God, driven by a desire to wage war against the heavens or to prevent another flood by building a structure that reached the sky

Their unified effort ultimately led them to sin. By choosing to gather in a single location, they directly refused God's intention for humanity to spread out and settle the entire earth Furthermore, they rejected the simple, natural life that God had provided. Instead, they sought to create an artificial, political, and technologically driven society focused on constructing a city and a tower in pursuit of luxury [אברבנאל].

A deeper social analysis reveals that this unified society was inherently dangerous. When a group of people gathers solely to make a name for themselves and achieve glory, the inevitable result is competition, jealousy, and internal warfare. Therefore, when God intervened to confuse their language and scatter them across the earth, He was not merely delivering a punishment. His action was a form of preventive medicine designed to save humanity from self destruction and establish true peace. By dispersing a society driven by ego, God prevented devastating power struggles [כלי יקר].

This dramatic shift occurred during the days of Peleg. Yet, even as the majority of the world rebelled, righteous and wise individuals such as Noah, Shem, Eber, and Abraham lived among them. These figures refused to participate in the rebellion. They maintained their faith, remaining devoted to the natural way of life and preserving the original language of creation
