Jacob’s arrival at his promised destination marks a moment of geographical precision and serves as a silent testimony to a miraculous survival. The narrative highlights both the specific identity of the location he reached and the complete, unbroken state of his camp after navigating severe dangers along the way.
Jacob arrives at Luz, which was the original name of the city [בכור שור]. Although he had visited this area previously, the city retained its original name because during his first visit, he only applied the new name of Bethel to the specific spot where he slept, leaving the broader city known as Luz [מלבי״ם]. Specifying that this city is located in the land of Canaan serves a distinct purpose. The primary approach among commentators is that this geographic marker distinguishes the location from another city also named Luz. This second city may have been newly built in the land of the Hittites [נתינה לגר], or perhaps located in a different region entirely outside of Canaan, such as the territory of the Perizzites [העמק דבר]. Therefore, the narrative clearly identifies the older Luz located within Canaan, the city recognized as Bethel.
The safe arrival of Jacob along with his entire household highlights the complete rescue of his family. Following the violent events in Shechem, not a single person from his camp was lost. This security was achieved because a deep fear of God fell upon the local inhabitants, preventing them from attacking Jacob's family from behind as they traveled [רד״ק]. Beneath this safe passage lies a much larger, hidden miracle. Ancient traditions recount that after the events in Shechem, the surrounding nations united and waged three fierce wars against Jacob's sons. The situation became so severe that Jacob himself had to take up arms and join the battle. The Torah keeps the description of these events brief because the miracle of their survival was somewhat hidden in the natural course of events. Yet, the emphasis on Jacob arriving with every single person in his camp reveals that despite the immense danger and the great wars they faced, his family emerged completely whole [רבנו בחיי].
